It is an important iron and steel center. There are other industries, including copper refining and textile and chemical manufacturing. Port Kembla, which was absorbed by Wollongong in 1947, is a major port. The Univ. of Wollongong is there.
Wollongong is a seaside city located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Wollongong lies on the narrow coastal strip between the Illawarra Escarpment and the Pacific Ocean, 82 kilometres south of Sydney.
